Pregnancy Due Date Calculator

Usually between 21 and 35 days. Default is 28.

Understanding How Your Due Date is Calculated

Calculating an Estimated Due Date (EDD) is the first exciting step in pregnancy planning. While very few babies arrive exactly on their due date, this calculation provides a crucial timeline for tracking fetal development and scheduling prenatal care.

The most common method used by healthcare providers is based on the first day of your Last Menstrual Period (LMP). Because the exact date of conception is often unknown, medical professionals calculate pregnancy as lasting roughly 40 weeks (or 280 days) from the start of the last period, assuming a standard 28-day menstrual cycle.

Why Cycle Length Matters

Not every woman has a "textbook" 28-day cycle. The critical event for pregnancy timing is ovulation, which typically occurs 14 days before the start of the next expected period.

  • Standard Cycle (28 days): Ovulation occurs around day 14. The standard 280-day calculation applies.
  • Longer Cycle (e.g., 35 days): Ovulation likely occurs around day 21 (later than average). Therefore, the due date is pushed back by the difference (35 – 28 = 7 days later).
  • Shorter Cycle (e.g., 24 days): Ovulation likely occurs around day 10 (earlier than average). The due date is brought forward by the difference (24 – 28 = -4 days earlier).

Our calculator above adjusts the standard 40-week timeline based on the average cycle length you provide to give a more personalized estimate.

Example Calculation

Let's look at how cycle length affects the outcome with realistic dates:

Imagine two women both had the first day of their last period on January 1st.

  • Woman A (28-day cycle): Her estimated due date would be approximately October 7th (January 1st + 280 days).
  • Woman B (32-day cycle): Because her cycle is 4 days longer than average, she likely ovulated 4 days later. Her estimated due date would be approximately October 11th (January 1st + 280 days + 4 adjustment days).

Remember that this calculator provides an estimation. An early ultrasound scan, usually performed between 8 and 14 weeks, is generally considered the most accurate method for dating a pregnancy.
