Pet Calorie Calculator

How Many Calories Does My Pet Need?

Providing the correct number of calories is vital for maintaining your pet's health and longevity. Obesity in pets can lead to serious health issues, including diabetes, arthritis, and heart disease. This calculator uses scientifically recognized formulas to estimate your pet's metabolic needs.

Understanding the Math: RER vs. DER

The calculation is broken into two main parts:

  • Resting Energy Requirement (RER): This is the energy used for basic body functions (breathing, digestion, heart function) while the pet is at rest. It is calculated as: RER = 70 × (Body Weight in kg)^0.75.
  • Daily Energy Requirement (DER): This is the total calories required per day based on the pet's activity level, age, and reproductive status. It is calculated by multiplying the RER by a specific factor.

Example Calculation

If you have a 10kg (22lb) neutered adult dog:

  1. Step 1: Calculate RER: 70 × (10^0.75) ≈ 394 calories.
  2. Step 2: Apply the factor for a neutered dog (1.6).
  3. Total DER: 394 × 1.6 = 630 calories per day.

Important Considerations

Remember that every pet is unique. Factors like breed, metabolism, environment temperature, and existing health conditions play a role. Treats should never exceed 10% of a pet's daily caloric intake. If your pet is underweight or overweight, use the "Weight Loss" or "Weight Gain" targets as guided by your vet.
