How Is Your Due Date Calculated?

Most pregnancies last approximately 40 weeks (280 days) from the first day of your last menstrual period (LMP). Our calculator uses the Naegele's Rule, which is the standard method used by healthcare providers worldwide. However, we go a step further by adjusting the calculation based on your specific menstrual cycle length.

If your cycle is longer than the "textbook" 28 days, you likely ovulated later, meaning your due date will be slightly later. Conversely, shorter cycles result in an earlier estimated due date.

Understanding the Trimesters

  • First Trimester (Weeks 1-12): A period of rapid development where the basic structures of the body form.
  • Second Trimester (Weeks 13-26): Often called the "golden period," where many parents-to-be feel a surge in energy and begin to feel fetal movement.
  • Third Trimester (Weeks 27-40): The final stretch where the baby grows significantly in size and prepares for birth.

Example Calculation

If the first day of your last period was January 1st and you have a 28-day cycle:

  1. Add 7 days to the first day of your LMP (January 8th).
  2. Subtract 3 months (October 8th).
  3. Adjust for the year (October 8th of the following year).

Your estimated due date would be October 8th.

Is the Due Date Guaranteed?

It is important to remember that an estimated due date (EDD) is just that—an estimate. Only about 4% of babies are born exactly on their due date. Most babies arrive between 37 and 42 weeks of pregnancy. Factors like ultrasound measurements in the first trimester provide the most accurate dating, as they measure the actual size of the embryo.
